Forrest Bess

Dans leurs formats restreints, les peintures iconoclastes de Forrest Bess referment des univers entiers d’expériences et de réflexions sur le monde. Tout en menant une existence de pêcheur, seul dans un camp sur le golfe du Mexique, et au contact constant des éléments, l’artiste a maintenu une présence singulière sur la scène artistique new-yorkaise, exposant régulièrement chez Betty Parsons dans les années 1940 et 1960. Grâce à elle, l’artiste fut reconnu comme un compagnon à la fois proche et en retrait des expressionnistes abstraits, tandis que ses œuvres attiraient l’attention des commissaires d’expositions les plus influents de son temps. À la croisée de signes personnels et d'idées universelles, ses œuvres traduisent un projet théorique plus vaste, inspiré notamment des travaux du psychologue Carl jung, du Yoga Kundalini, de l’Alchimie ou encore des cultures aborigènes d’Australie. Guidé par ces courants de pensée, il en vint à croire que l’hermaphrodisme permettait d’atteindre un état de complétude ou, selon ses propres mots, « l’état parfait de l’homme. » Malgré l’ampleur des idées qui les traversent, ses toiles, d’une intensité rare, demeurent sobres, tant par leur format que par leur économie de moyens. Souvent encadrées de bois flotté et travaillées dans une matière dense et nervurée où s'entrelacent couleurs et textures avec une certaine maîtrise, elles traduisent une tension entre une vie intérieure intense et un monde extérieur dénué d’artifice.

L’historien de l’art Meyer Schapiro écrivait à propos de ses œuvres : « La peinture est d’une telle simplicité, d’une telle franchise – si proche des bandes de bois brut et patiné par le temps dont il encadre ses tableaux – qu’elle semble, au premier regard, l’œuvre d’un primitif civilisé autodidacte, aux compétences limitées. Mais regardez ses merveilleux noirs, riches de nuances : granuleux, mats, brillants ou rugueux, et vous reconnaîtrez sa connaissance, sa rigueur, sa maîtrise d’une technique exigeante. […] Ces petites œuvres graves, si amples et fermes dans leur conception, ont traversé les années sans faiblir. »

Forrest Bess est né en 1911 à Bay City, Texas. Il est décédé en 1977 dans cette même ville. Il a étudié l’architecture à l’université avant de rejoindre l’effort de guerre dans l’unité des camouflages. Il a peint ses premières visions en 1946 et a commencé à exposer à la galerie Betty Parsons pendant quatre ans. Bien que ses œuvres aient été reconnues des principaux commissaires d’exposition de l’époque, et collectionnées par des figures influentes, il demeure à la fin de sa vie dans un certain anonymat. Régulièrement qualifié « d’artiste d’artistes », son travail bénéficie aujourd’hui d’un intérêt renouvelé dans les sphères curatoriale et académique. En 2013, la Menil Collection a organisé une rétrospective itinérante de Forrest Bess : Seeing Things Invisible. Une exposition de dix-huit peintures chez Modern Art en 2018 a été suivie d’une emblématique rétrospective au Fridericianum, Cassel, en 2020. Puis, deux ans plus tard, en septembre 2022, le Camden Art Centre, Londres, a ouvert une autre exposition rétrospective sur son travail.Ses œuvres font partie des collections du Dallas Museum of Art; Kunstmuseum Winterthur; The Menil Collection, Houston; MCA Chicago; MoMA, New York; The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.; the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford; et du Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
