Sarah Rapson

L’économie de moyens qui caractérise le travail de Sarah Rapson traverse aussi bien ses films en noir et blanc que ses peintures minimalistes aux tons restreints. Ses œuvres murales sont le fruit d'assemblages de documents imprimés accumulés sur plusieurs décennies, mais aussi de médiums plus traditionnels comme l’huile sur toile ou l’encre sur papier. Tout en se référant discrètement à la tradition de la critique institutionnelle, ses œuvres affirment souvent leur nature éphémère. L’utilisation de matériaux issus de la presse spécialisée – comme des extraits du New York Times – traduit un rapport direct à l’histoire de l’art et à la place que l’artiste cherche à y occuper, entre désir assumé et confrontation aux limites du geste artistique.

Sarah Rapson est née à Londres en 1959. Entre 1979 et 1981, elle a étudié au Hornsey College of Art à Londres (1979-81). L’École des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, France (1982-3), Whitney Independent Study program New York (1990-91). Son travail a été montré récemment à Essex Street Gallery, New York, NY, USA; Modern Art Paris, MACRO, Rome, Italie; Secession Vienna, KW Berlin, Bonner Kunsthalle, Frac Lorraine Metz, White Columns, New York, NY, États-Unis. Des textes sur son travail ont été publiés dans Artforum, Texte zur Kunst, Burlington Contemporary et Art Monthly.
