Josh Kline

Josh Kline works across sculpture, video and large-scale installations to consider societies and ecologies on the brink of collapse. Often turning to the formal reconstruction and distortion of ready-made, everyday consumer objects - loaded with the supposed spoils of their dystopian contexts - Kline’s work attests to the potential human consequences of automation, artificial intelligence, surveillance, economic disparity and mass-unemployment in the decades ahead. Often, Kline’s work is constructed through these very technologies themselves, such as 3D printing and CGI animation, while at other times they borrow from the aesthetics of corporations and political campaigns. As such, they convey an eerie echo of discourses on truth, affect, class and democracy – by way of post-humanism and the Anthropocene – to think about the seismic changes and problems emerging in the 21st Century.

Josh Kline was born in Philadelphia in 1979, and lives and works in New York City. Solo exhibitions include: Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2023); LAXART, Los Angeles (2022); Astrup Fearnley Museet, Oslo (2020); Modern Art, London (2017); Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin (2016); Portland Art Museum (2016); and Modern Art Oxford (2015). He will have a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in June 2024. He has participated in recent group exhibitions at Yokohama Museum of Art (2024); 24th Biennale of Sydney, White Bay Power Station, Sydney (2024); Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk (2023); Centre Pompidou-Metz (2022); Belgrade City Museum (2021); Kunsthalle Tübingen (2020); Museum Folkwang, Essen (2019); the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2019); the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2019); and Museum of Modern Art, New York (2019). Kline’s works are held in collections including Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.
